An essential ingredient with endless possibilities

Tinned Tomatoes

Tomatoes are incredibly healthy and are one of the top ten power foods you should be eating to stay in tip-top condition. Luckily recipes for tomatoes are almost endless! Below are just a few ideas.

  1. Add to browned minced beef or lamb, season with chopped onion and herbs and simmer – and you have the sauce for spaghetti bolognese, the nation’s favourite meal and a fine source of nourishment.

  2. Heat gently in a pan and spoon onto your fry-up to complement your mushrooms and black pudding perfectly, as well as to provide welcome nutrition.

  3. Spread thinly and evenly over pizza base for the classic foundation for most pizza toppings. The tomatoes help keep your pizza moist, without overpowering the flavour of what you layer on top. Try our recipe for Roasted Vegetable Pizza or Pizza Baguette.

  4. Pour over white cod fillets to turn a classic English dish into a Mediterranean treat. Place fish and tinned tomatoes in a greased baking tin with sliced onions and herbs, cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

  5. Stir into seasoned minced beef and kidney beans with seasonal chillies and heat slowly for a classic chilli con carne: a dish rich in flavour, fibre, protein and – once you add the rice – slow-release carbohydrates, too. If you’re nervous about using real chillies, use the powdered variety. Why not try our recipe for Chilli Con Carne?

  6. Turn them into a salsa to serve, Spanish-style, on potatoes: pour the whole tin into a bowl and stir in salt, lemon juice, 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 crushed cloves of garlic and a dash of Tabasco.
