Full of goodness, flavour and crunch

Apples

Apples first came to the UK with the Romans, and we’ve been confirmed fans ever since. There’s even an annual Apple Day in their honour, held every year on 21st October. As well as being delicious they're very good for you – take a look at some of the health benefits.

  • Apples are an excellent source of vitamin C – which must be topped up daily to help keep colds and flu at bay.

  • They’re a great source of soluble fibre, which helps digestion.

  • When it comes to British apples, we’re spoiled for choice – there are over 2,000 varieties, including Knobby Russet and Nutmeg Pippin and the more familiar Cox – grown in fields across Kent, Sussex, Suffolk, East Anglia and the Midlands.

  • Eating apples is good for lowering levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

  • They contain cancer-fighting antioxidants, including phytonutrients in the skin that help prevent bowel cancer, and flavonoids which help prevent lung cancer and prostate cancer.

  • Apples contain boron, which is good for bone growth.
