Love cheese? This makes a refreshing alternative to cheddar

Goats Cheese

We love cheese. In Britain we eat 590,000 tonnes of the stuff. Goat’s cheese only accounts for about one per cent of the total cheese market, but over the past few years demand has increased by around 20 per cent.

  • Goat’s milk is a good source of protein as well as providing calcium for strong teeth and bones.

  • It has potassium for regulating blood pressure.

  • It contains vitamin B12 for healthy skin and hair.

  • Goat’s cheese is higher in protein and lower in fat and calories than full-fat cow’s milk.

  • Fresh goat’s cheese is a healthier option than cheddar, with 66 calories per 40g compared to 165 calories for cheddar, plus it has around a third of the fat.

  • People who are lactose intolerant are able to eat goat’s cheese. Although it contains lactose, it is already partially broken down, making digestion far easier. It only takes the body a quarter of an hour to digest goat’s milk – a third of the time it takes to digest cow’s milk.
