"Food is a major part of my family life," says Julia, whose parents are both enthusiastic cooks. These delicious doughnuts – Loukoumades – hold happy memories for Julia. "This is what I usually made with my Yaya (grandmother) every time I went for my summer holidays and she looked after me."

Loukoumades have always been a popular sweet in Greece, especially as a mid-morning snack in cafés and pastry shops. They are the oldest recorded European pastry and were awarded to the victors in the ancient Olympic Games.

These delectable doughnuts are delicious served with a scoop of ice cream, and in Greece they are sometimes sprinkled with chopped nuts, especially walnuts, or sesame seeds, and are best eaten on the same day as they are made.
