The GB athletics team put in some show-stopping performances at January's Glasgow AVIVA Internationals to clinch second place in the competition.

Excellent performances by the likes of Jessica Ennis, SPAR athletics ambassador Jenny Meadows, Helen Clitheroe and Mark Lewis-Francis saw the team notch up 56 points, only five points behind the leaders Germany.

Jenny Meadows ran a great race, leading from start to finish and clocking a time of 2:01:17.

Afterwards she said: “It felt really comfortable, really smooth. I’m hoping that’s a good omen for the rest of the year – last year I had a really good indoors but I spent much of the outdoor season frustrated.”

Fellow Brit and 800m athlete Marilyn Okoro also had a solid race, coming in third, close behind Germany’s Jana Hartman.

And the British captain Jessica Ennis came first in the 60m hurdles and third in the long jump. Ennis said: “I ran 7.95 last year and I knew I was in good shape so to come here and do that again shows I’ve done the right things over the winter. I think the latter part of my race is better so I came through quite well.”

Also winning medals were Helen Clitheroe, who took gold in the 3000m while team mate Laura Kenney took the bronze, and Jeanette Kwakye and Joice Maduaka who both finished second in the 60m and 200m. In the field, Holly Bleasdale took silver in the pole vault and Kate Dennison came fourth.

The boys keep the medals rolling in

Mark Lewis Francis lead the way for the British male athletes, running a 6.66 in the 60m, fending off competition to take gold.

“It looks like I’m in decent shape,” he said. “I didn’t know what sort of shape I was in before I came. I’m on top of the world right now, I’m just glad to be performing again.”

Andy Turner took silver in the 60m hurdles with his fastest ever season opener, followed by compatriot Lawrence Clarke. Turner was slightly disappointed with his performance because he hit a hurdle.

“It would have been closer if I hadn’t hit the hurdle. I’m not saying I would have beaten him but it would have been close. I was hoping to get at least within a metre of David [Oliver] but I’m confident that things can only get faster.”

Danny Talbot ran a solid race in the 200m, coming in third, while in the field Tom Parsons and Ben Williams took silvers in the high jump and triple jump.

The GB team will compete once more at the AVIVA UK Trials & Championships in Sheffield on 12-13 February.
