The Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team delivered an outstanding performance at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona this summer, winning a record 19 medals – see our review below. And check out our medals table listing how many medals each country won.
Team GB's record-breaking performance
Our athletes did us proud, winning six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals, breaking the previous record medal haul with 19 medals.
Jenny’s championship
SPAR's athletics ambassador Jenny Meadows had an exceptional championships after having competed just once this season after an achilles injury.
By her own admission, she was only at 95%, but that was not going to stop her. Jenny ran a solid first race with the second fastest time in the heats overall, which had the pundits making her favourite for the gold.
The final proved dramatic, Jenny found herself leading the pack as the athletes came into the final straight, followed closely by the Russian Savinova and Dutch athlete Hakk. Savinova kicked into another gear leaving Jenny and Yvonne Hakk to fight it out for the silver. Hakk crossed the line less than a second ahead of Meadows to take the silver, but Jenny was delighted with her race, clocking a time of 1.59.93 and winning a bronze medal. Well done, Jenny!
Gold medal haul
World champions Jessica Ennis and Phillips Idowu led the GB medal haul, both taking gold, with Mo Farah winning the double in the 5,000m and 10,000m. Hurdlers Andy Turner in the 110m and Dai Greene in the 400m took gold in their respective events, and both look to be promising prospects ahead of 2012.
There were many more medals for Team GB – see below for a full list.
It was a great Championship for Team GB, after disappointment in the World Cup, our athletics team have given us hope for the future, rounding off another enthralling championship that SPAR was proud to be a part of as principal sponsor.
