Find a gym that suits you and getting fit will be fun

Want to get fit and join a gym? Choosing the right one can make all the difference to you keeping your resolve and staying the distance. Before you sign yourself up to a monthly membership fee, visit several gyms and look at your options – here are some tips to help…

  1. When you have narrowed down a few options, call each gym and talk to a membership advisor for an idea of peak and off-peak prices. This will save you a journey if the gym is out of your price range.

  2. Be realistic. Choose a gym that is convenient for you to visit from home or work and you’re more likely to visit it often. Check that the opening times will fit in with your schedule. Find out if there is ample free car parking and a crèche if needed.

  3. Ask to have a look around. When you arrive, notice how the reception staff greet and treat you. First impressions count and if the receptionists appear unprofessional, there is a chance that the fitness staff will be the same.

  4. Ask the right questions: Will I have to pay for a locker? Are towels available? Is there shower gel and shampoo in the showers? Will I be given a fitness test and gym induction if I join? Will I be regularly monitored and is there a follow-up system to check on my progress?

  5. Check that it has the facilities you need. Do you want to develop your social life? If so, check if it has a bar or café and if there are regular organised social events for members.

  6. Find out whether your fitness tests, instructors and exercise classes are included in the membership fee.

  7. Lastly, don’t forget to read the small print and ask questions if you’re unsure of anything in your contract. Most of the bigger fitness chains require a 12- to 18-month contract, with redemption costs if you want to terminate it before the term has run out. Also, make sure that any joining fee is a one-off payment.

  8. When all the paperwork is done, take a realistic approach to your new work-out programme. Book in for a fitness test and gym equipment induction. Listen to your instructor and follow the programme they give you to get the best results and don’t be afraid to ask them for help.
