We are now living longer than ever. The average life expectancy in the UK is now 77 for men and 81 for women. So how do you make sure you stay looking and feeling good for as long as possible? Here are our anti ageing tips:

Watch your weight – those who live well into their old age have a healthy weight and are not obese.
Check your diet – even if you are not overweight you may not be getting the best nutrition, and an anti ageing diet can protect against heart disease, cancer and stroke. Avoid simple sugars and swap refined products (white bread, rice and pasta) for the wholegrain versions which have a lower glycaemic index and help to keep energy levels steady and cravings under control. Eat a good selection of vegetables (including green leafy ones) and fruit. Keep your intake of red and processed meats to no more than 70g a day, equivalent to three rashers of bacon or two sausages. Research has shown that consuming more than this can increase the likelihood of cancer – one of the biggest killers in the UK. Avoid saturated fats and eat healthy fats instead, such as those found in olive oil, almonds, hazelnuts, avocados and salmon.
Stop smoking – we all know that smoking has been linked to certain cancers as well as heart disease. Studies also show that it causes premature ageing of the skin – making you look older too.
Limit alcohol – drinking too much is also linked to serious disease, but research has also shown that drinking red wine can be anti ageing, containing antioxidants that boost health.
Keep moving – staying fit will help you control your weight and give you more energy. It also helps to maintain mobility – if you don’t use it, you lose it. The exercises don’t have to be vigorous – walking, swimming, cycling and yoga and everyday activities like housework and gardening can all raise the heart rate and prove beneficial.
Get out there – don’t be lonely. Contact your local council for day centres you can attend and find out about daytime and evening classes you could do where you can take up a new hobby and mix with others.
