Local Sustainability

SPAR has been running its ‘Keep It Local’ campaign for seven years to strengthen and promote SPAR stores’ community links

SPAR supports local businesses by ensuring that locally produced goods are stocked in many of its stores. A study by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) showed that smaller stores like ours put more of their turnover back into the local economies they serve. In fact the data reveals that 11% of SPAR's turnover is invested in direct spending on local goods, services and staff.

Living Local

Local sourcing for life

SPAR and the WI have embarked on a trial project called Living Local, which is designed to promote local sourcing and social cohesion in the community. The scenic village of Bampton in Devon is the test ground, assessing the positive impact of local sourcing and better collaboration between the community and its businesses.

Since its launch in August 28th 2006, Living Local has raised its profile through a series of Bampton area activities, including an Open Day, educational visits to primary schools and a variety of events. Area residents have been asked to complete a questionnaire about current levels of local sourcing and involvement in the community.

Local Community
Using the results of the Living Local project as a benchmark, SPAR intends to roll the project out across the UK.
