Charity Winning School Design Hits the Road

SPAR Scotland has unveiled a new Marie Curie-themed lorry livery created by a primary school pupil from East Ayrshire, following a nationwide design competition held earlier this year.

SPAR Scotland invited primary school children across the country to design a vehicle livery celebrating its long-standing partnership with Marie Curie. The competition received 80 entries, highlighting creativity, colour and charitable spirit from pupils nationwide.

The winning artwork was created by Finlay, age 12, from Bellsbank Primary School in East Ayrshire. Although Finlay has since moved on to secondary school, SPAR Scotland and Marie Curie were delighted to surprise him and his mum with the news. In recognition of the school’s fantastic participation, SPAR Scotland also donated £1,000 to Bellsbank Primary as a thank you for the high calibre of entries submitted.

On 26 November, representatives from Marie Curie visited the CJ Lang & Son’s depot in Dundee for the official unveiling of the newly wrapped lorry and to receive a £2,500 donation – the total raised at SPAR Scotland’s 2025 Tradeshow in Aviemore.

The lorry featuring Finlay’s design will now travel the length and breadth of Scotland, helping raise awareness for Marie Curie and the essential end-of-life care they provide.

Paula Middleton, Head of Marketing at SPAR Scotland, said: “We are incredibly proud to support the vital work of Marie Curie Nurses, who provide comfort, care and dignity to people at the end of life and to families during what can be the most difficult time of the year. For many, Christmas is especially hard, and Marie Curie Nurses ease that burden so families can focus on spending precious moments together.

“We were thrilled with the response to our design competition and delighted to see Finlay’s creativity brought to life on one of our vehicles.”

Christine Connor, Marie Curie Corporate Partnerships Manager Scotland, added: “We are always grateful to SPAR Scotland for giving our charity a platform to raise much-needed awareness. Every conversation matters. By highlighting that we are not solely a cancer charity, but here for anyone facing a terminal illness, we can connect with more patients and families in need and strengthen communities across Scotland, ensuring no one faces their journey alone.

“This newly wrapped lorry, featuring our helpline details, will be a pivotal part of our partnership, helping us reach even more people who need our support.”
