With Halloween approaching, the itch to start concocting some impressive Halloween recipes should be creeping up on you by now. Halloween Snacks

1. Spooky Mummy Pizzas

The first of our Halloween snacks, and a perfect appetizer to start on, Spooky Mummy Pizzas are easy to make, tasty to eat – and look great. Combining pizza sauce and mozzarella on a sliced muffin with accompanying stuffed olives for eyes – these mummy pizzas are a fun and playful way of serving up a much loved favourite at your Halloween party.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pack of 4 muffins split in half
  • 8 tbsp pizza sauce
  • 16 slices of pimento stuffed olives (4 large olives)
  • 8 ready-made slices of mozzarella or white cheese

Method:
Start by spreading each muffin half with a tablespoon of pizza sauce, then add two olive slices for eyes. Lay the strips of cheese randomly across the muffins to resemble bandages, and use kitchen scissors to trim around the edges. Simply place on a baking sheet and bake at 200°C for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted.

2. Witch’s Fingers

There’s nothing quite like food shaped like a severed body part to really get a Halloween party going. In fact, it wouldn’t quite be one without it. The Witch’s Fingers recipe brings another savoury addition to your table – combining a basic bread recipe with almond halves and a touch of food colouring to bring simple yet tasty Halloween snacks to your party.


Ingredients:
  • 12 blanched almonds split lengthways
  • Red and green food colouring
  • 225 g strong plain flour
  • 3g fast action dried yeast (about half a sachet)
  • Large pinch of salt
  • 125 -135ml warm water
  • Oil for brushing
Method:

Begin by painting the curved sides of the almonds with the food colouring, and set aside. Then mix the flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl, and add most of the warm water to form a dough, adding the remainder if the mixture is a bit dry. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about ten minutes, then divide the dough into 24 pieces and roll into thin sausage shapes. Place onto a large floured baking sheet before topping with the almonds at the end of each finger. With a knife, make a shallow slash just below the nail followed by another 3 to create the knuckles. Oil a piece of cling film and cover the fingers with it, and allow to rise for 30 minutes, then remove the film and bake at 200°C for approximately 20 minutes until lightly browned.

3. Guacamouldy and Spooky Dippers

If there was ever a food designed to be used in Halloween food, it was guacamole. Its luminescence makes it the perfect base for spooky dippers, while adding onion, chilli, coriander, lime, salt and pepper makes for a moreish dip that can take pride of place amongst the starters. The tortillas for dipping add the finishing Halloween touches.

Ingredients:
  • 16 corn tortillas
  • Olive oil for brushing
  • 6 large avocados
  • 1/2 small onion very finely chopped
  • 1 or 2 mild green chillies de-seeded and very finely chopped
  • Small bunch of coriander very finely chopped
  • Juice of a lime
  • Sea salt and black pepper
  • Small jar of stuffed olives, sliced into rings
Method:

Use Halloween cookie cutters to cut out chips from the tortillas, before brushing both sides with the oil and placing on a baking tray – bake for about 5 minutes at 180°C. Halve the avocados, remove the stone, and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh and place in a bowl, add the onion, chilli, coriander and lime juice and use a fork to mash the avocado and combine the ingredients. Season to taste and fold in the olives, keeping a few aside to place on top, transfer to a serving bowl and decorate with the remaining olives.

4. Hot Dog Mummies

The final in our Halloween snacks collection, hot dog mummies can carry on where the pizzas left off by offering full length mummy bodies for your guests to devour. Simple jumbo hot dogs wrapped in ready rolled shortcrust pastry make these Halloween treats quick and easy to make.

Ingredients:
  • 6 jumbo hotdogs halved
  • 1 pack of ready rolled shortcrust pastry
  • American style mustard

Method:
Unroll the shortcrust pastry and leave it on the plastic. Use a pizza cutter to produce thin, uneven strips. Take a sausage half and wrap it up in a pastry strip, criss-crossing it here and there and leaving a gap for the face – then take another strip and wrap the remainder. Repeat with all the sausage halves and bake at 200°C for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is lightly browned. Allow them to cool and then use the mustard to make two eyes on each sausage. Serve with extra mustard on the side for dipping.

5. Ghostly Apples

A classic when it comes to Halloween treats, our take on toffee apples brings a pleasant twist to the classic treat, trading out the toffee for white chocolate and desiccated coconut for a sweet surprise for your guests. Perfectly combining Halloween flavours with a ghostly new look, your Halloween ghost apples are sure to go down a storm with both kids and adults.

Ingredients:
  • 6 light coloured apples
  • 6 sturdy twigs, scrubbed clean
  • 200g white chocolate
  • 1 or 2 tsp sunflower oil
  • 100g desiccated coconut
Method:

Start by removing the stems from the apples before skewering each one with a twig. Break the chocolate into a heatproof bowl and place over a pan of simmering water, stirring until it melts. Add a teaspoon of oil to give the chocolate a smoother texture for dipping, before dipping the apples into the chocolate, turning them to give good coverage. Allow the excess to drip off then cover with coconut by spooning on. Chill the apples then serve!

6. Phantom Punch

Ingredients:
For the hand
  • Clean latex gloves
  • Water tinted with a little green food colouring
For the punch
  • 250 ml brandy
  • 250 ml fresh orange juice (no bits)
  • 1 thinly sliced red apple
  • 1 thinly sliced orange
  • 2 bottles chilled red wine like Rioja
  • Soda water
  • Green food colouring
Method:

Make the phantom hands by filling latex gloves with the food colouring and water, and tie the ends with elastic bands or twist ties. Freeze until solid and peel away the gloves just before ready to serve.

For the punch mixture, simply mix together the brandy, orange juice and sliced fruit and chill until ready. Now place the ice hands in a large punchbowl, before adding the fruit and brandy mixture and pouring on the red wine. All that’s left to do now is place it centre stage for all to see!
