SPAR and the NSPCC are working together to keep children safe in every community around our stores. It’s a partnership that’s been going strong for ten years. By the end of 2016 SPAR store employees (and our five wholesale members A.F. Blakemore & Son, Appleby Westward, James Hall, CJ Lang and Henderson’s) will have raised over £5 million for NSPCC services through a variety of fundraising initiatives from a 500 mile bike ride to golf days, fundraising balls and fancy dress events.
Since 2013 SPAR has focused its efforts on supporting the NSPCC’s Schools Service. As part of the Schools Service, the NSPCC run a “Speak out. Stay safe.” Programme. This aims to visit every primary school across the UK – teaching children, in a child friendly way, how to recognise abuse, and how to speak out and get help when they need it.
The NSPCC have now visited over 15,000 schools and reached more than 1 million children with this service.
Over Four million SPAR sandwiches sold helps raise £250k for NSPCC
“Antonia Smith, a Retail Trainer from Blakemore Retail, is doing some fantastic work volunteering for the NSPCC Schools Service.”
Using assemblies and workshops delivered by trained volunteers like Antonia, the NSPCC Schools Service talks to primary school children about abuse, how to recognize it and who they can turn to if they need support.
Antonia, who has an 11 year old daughter, said: “I saw a video at one of our conferences about the NSPCC Schools Service and it all took off from there.
I’ve now finished my training and have helped deliver at my first assembly.” She said. “I would encourage people to volunteer for this service. It is an amazing thing to do and there is no greater reward!”
All Blakemore Retail employees are eligible to volunteer for the NSPCC Schools Service and as a company are allowed to volunteer in work time to support the programme. Currently they have 9 members of staff actively volunteering, ranging from Area Managers, Post Office staff, sales assistants and trainers.
“Over Four million SPAR sandwiches’ sold helps raise £250k for NSPCC”
The money has been raised since 2011 through a sandwich promotion on a range of seven different sandwiches at SPAR stores in the North of England.
For each of these SPAR sandwiches sold, we donate 5p to the children’s charity. The most popular – the SPAR Chicken Salad – raised a staggering £37,187.75 alone!
The sandwiches are made by staff at James Hall & Co factories in Blackpool and Preston. James Hall & Co, which also has its headquarters in Preston, is the SPAR distributor for the North of England and supplies over 540 stores across the region.
Andrew Barnes, Trading and Marketing Director at James Hall & Co said: “These are some of our best-selling lines. We are delighted to have raised over £250,000 for the NSPCC Schools Service. I know it will make a real difference to children here in the North and across the UK, helping volunteers to reach more children to talk to them about abuse.”
“Change for Children is the fundraising campaign held every year when Spar Northern Ireland stores fundraise for the NSPCC.”
This year over 120 SPAR stores in Northern Ireland carried out a wide variety of fundraising events and activities during the same week to raise funds – coffee mornings, car washes, bike rides and fancy dress days, raising £27,000.
