Staying Active Outside of School

Staying active outside of school is crucial for the physical and mental well-being of children.

With the increasing demands of academics, it's important to ensure that kids have opportunities to engage in sports and other activities that keep them physically fit and healthy.

One of the most anticipated events in a school year is the school sports day, where students participate in various sports competitions.

Children having fun and exercising

However, it's equally important for kids to stay active beyond this annual event. Encouraging them to engage in regular physical activities outside of school not only helps them stay fit but also teaches them valuable life skills such as teamwork, dedication, and discipline.

Have a look below on the fun steps we’ve thought of to get more active!

Count your Steps / Every step counts!

Turn your everyday walk into a step challenge, set yourself a daily goal and see if you can reach it using a pedometer or step-tracking app on your smart device. During the school day, a child will get lots of steps in without even trying!

Outdoor Games

Gather your friends and family for a game of tag, hide and seek, or even a friendly football match. Playing games outside is not only fun but also a great way to stay active and healthy.

Nature Walk / Back to Nature

Getting out and about is a fantastic way to get some fresh air, appreciate nature, and keep your body moving. Turn a walk into an adventure with a scavenger hunt, create a list of items like a unique-shaped leaf and see who can find them all first.

Skipping rope / Skip to it

Skipping is a great way for kids to burn energy and has numerous health benefits. It requires very little space and only requires a rope. Why not challenge your friends to a skipping contest or try your hand at some skipping tricks and techniques to impress them.

Get on your bike

Riding a bike is not only fun but it’s also a great way to improve your balance and strengthen your leg muscles. Take your bike for a spin around your neighbourhood or the park – and don’t forget to stay safe and wear a cycling helmet.

Take the stairs

Choose the stairs over the elevator or escalator to increase your physical activity and strengthen your muscles. Challenge yourself to see how quickly you can climb the stairs - it's a simple way to add exercise to your daily routine!

Dance like nobody’s watching!

Transform your bedroom into a dance floor and have a dance party to your favourite tunes. Invite your friends or family to join in the fun. Dancing is a fantastic full-body workout that not only keeps you active but also lifts your mood.

School Sports Grants

SPAR UK is giving away £50,000 in support of Sports Days across schools in the UK. This scheme will give schools across England, Scotland & Wales a chance to apply for £200 grants to buy new sports equipment. Applications are open from 8th February 2024.
