We are committed to eliminating single use plastic in our SPAR brand packaging

Packaging plays an important role in protecting food.  It protects it from damage and keeps it fresher for longer, making sure that the food from SPAR always reaches you in the best possible condition.  However, we also want to ensure that we minimise our impact on the environment by reducing our use of plastics and ensuring our packaging is recyclable wherever possible. With this in mind, we have made 4 key commitments regarding our SPAR own brand packaging:

  1. We will eliminate black plastic from all SPAR brand packaging by the end of 2020
  2. We will eliminate all SPAR brand single use plastics by 2025
  3. All SPAR brand plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025
  4. We will have a minimum of 30% recycled content in SPAR brand plastic packaging by 2025

Progress so far…

We have already made significant progress towards reducing our use of plastic packaging:

  • We have replaced 300 tonnes of virgin plastic with recycled material in over 50 SPAR brand products including water, flavoured water, cider, squash and mixers.  This packaging now contains up to 51% recycled content
  • We have prevented over 100 tonnes of black plastic from 47 products going to landfill by replacing it with clear or coloured packaging material, eg sausages, cooked meats, ready meals and fresh chicken
  • Our SPAR brand ready meal trays contain 80% recycled material and are fully recyclable
  • SPAR has signed the UK Plastics Pact. The UK Plastics Pact is a collaborative initiative which started in 2018 and aims to create a circular economy for plastics. It brings together suppliers and retail businesses from across the entire plastics value chain with UK government, NGOs and trade organisations to tackle the scourge of plastic waste. This demonstrates SPAR’s clear commitment to reducing our use of plastics and ensuring a more sustainable future.
  • Our SPAR brand ready meal trays contain 80% recycled material and are fully recyclable
  • Our cotton bud stems are made from paper rather than plastic

We know that our customers want more information on recycling and therefore we now include packaging recycling information on the back of over 700 SPAR brand products.  We aim to have recycling information on the back of all own brand products by the end of 2021.
