With 12,545 stores spread across 44 countries worldwide, there’s more to SPAR than your convenient local down the road. Much more. Having started in the UK 60 years ago in May 1957 – SPAR has gone on to develop a presence of over 2,700 stores across the UK, serving neighbourhoods of all kinds up and down the country. But how much do you actually know about SPAR? Discover the SPAR history below to see why we’re the UK’s leading convenience store group, and how we ensure that our focus on community has never been lost.
SPAR History – Always There For You
Originating in Holland in 1932, SPAR was originally known as De SPAR. An acronym of the Dutch phrase Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig, it roughly translates to ‘All will benefit from joint cooperation’ – a mantra that SPAR still upholds today. Although our current strapline, There For You, was adopted after our half-century anniversary in 2007 – it’s been a part of the SPAR approach since day one.
SPAR Business Model – Always Accessible
Our business model is unique, and one that serves our customers just as well as it does our store owners. Owned by five wholesale distribution businesses across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. This has allowed SPAR UK to facilitate a distinctive, unique presence for all stores while also instilling unity when it comes to product expectations, promotions and deals. With an enviable product supply chain that allows us access to quality, fresh food quickly – you’ll find all the great value products and promotions you expect from your local convenience store in SPAR stores across the country, all while experiencing a new environment with each store.
SPAR Stores – Always Local
Regardless of size or location, every SPAR you visit is unique in its own way, meaning you don’t lose that local touch. SPAR’s unique offering is reflected in store by each and every one of its owners. They run their shop much like an independent local convenience store – but with access to an exceptional range of products from our supply chain, at great value that is always passed on to you.
As the UK’s leading local retailer, we take pride in giving back to the community. That’s why we always source local produce where possible, not only reducing food miles but supporting local businesses in the process. A high proportion of revenue earned by SPAR stores is also recycled back into the community rather than being absorbed by a corporate business – meaning your local convenience store acts as much more than just a place to pick up your essentials. And it always will. SPAR Future – Always Developing The history of SPAR is one of community and togetherness, which has always been maintained across our stores within the UK, as well as the rest of the world. Our vision is to provide you with all the conveniences you need, without losing the communal feel many appreciate from their local modern convenience store. This is something we have always strived to achieve – and will continue to provide. We are also investing in the future of our independent entrepreneurs as well as our customers, so that you are always provided with the best possible service from your local convenience store. 60 Years of SPAR To celebrate 60 years of SPAR, we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and look back at some of the food trends of past decades that informed our taste buds today. How many of these were you eating back then?
