We’ve had heroes of all kinds step through our storefronts over the last 60 years. From those in platforms to rollerblades and high tops – but while the fashions have changed, SPAR has remained the same familiar name through it all…
Take a trip down memory lane to find out more about SPAR and how we’ve been there for you for generations.
SPAR History – 1957 to 2017
In a time when few homes owned a refrigerator and Elvis Presley ruled the charts, SPAR arrived on UK shores. Since then, we’ve been serving communities large and small, up and down the country.
Fast forward 60 years, and SPAR now has 12,545 stores located across the world – meaning you could go to a different SPAR every day for 34 years, and every single one would have a unique story to tell! Of our 2,700 UK stores, all are dedicated to helping your local communities as well as nationwide causes, which is why we’ve been in partnerships with UK charities for more than 10 years. From raising £5 million for NSPCC since 2007, to striking a partnership with Marie Curie this year – we’ve become more than just your local convenience store.
That said, our convenience credentials are pretty impressive too. Believe it or not, there was a time when convenience stores across the UK would shut – in the afternoon! Enter SPAR, the first to convenience store to operate an ‘8 till late’ policy, saving the day and changing your shopping experience for the better, forever.
So just how have we developed over the years from pioneering convenience store to so much more? Well, much like our customers’ choice of footwear – through active (and sometimes drastic) change.
About SPAR’s transformation
From introducing our own label goods to our stores way back in the 50s, to changing the shop front symbol to the one you know and love today before the Rubik’s Cube was even invented – we’ve never been afraid of change. The constant ability to adapt to our customers’ needs is what has allowed us to become the UK’s leading convenience store group.
Whether it was stocking instant favourites like Smash and Fray Bentos pies back in the swinging 60s to introducing frozen favourites like pizza and chips when the nation started its love affair with takeaways – we’ve always been there for you to offer you all your latest favourites. That’s why SPAR brand cola hit the shelves in 1995 (and has been going strong ever since), and why you can always rely on your local convenience store to stock the latest and greatest food trends, just for you.
