ST LUKE’S HOSPICE – SUPPORTING LOCAL PEOPLE IN HARROW AND BRENT

As part of SPAR’s 2024 Community Cashback grant scheme, St Luke’s Hospice were awarded £6,000 to support the amazing work they do to help their local community.

St Luke’s Hospice is a charity that cares for people approaching the end of their life in Harrow and Brent. They aim to give the people they care for the best possible quality of life, each and every day. Supporting local people and their families is at the heart of what they do.

St Luke’s Hospice spent their grant on new garden furniture for their Patient Garden, allowing the people in their care to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of their award-winning gardens.

Many studies have shown that people living with end of life/palliative conditions experience benefits to their mental health from being able to spend time outdoors in a safe and comfortable environment. St Luke’s aim is to provide those that we care for the best quality of life and we know how it important spending time outdoors can be for people.

John Clifford, Corporate Partnership Manager at St Luke’s Hospice commented:

“This grant will have a real impact in improving the quality of our care at St Luke’s Hospice. Many studies have shown that people living with end of life/palliative conditions experience benefits to their mental health from being able to spend time outdoors in a safe and comfortable environment.”

St Luke’s inpatient unit (IPU) Kenton Grange cares for people in their final days, providing intensive care to help get symptoms under control or give respite care. However, many of the people who are cared for in the IPU go home again.

A specialist community team of nurses helps people to manage more complex needs whilst the Hospice at Home team supports people to remain in their own homes by providing practical care and support.

St Luke’s Hospice, like many other charities, face a number of challenges in the current climate. Inflation and the ‘Cost of Living’ crisis has resulted in a large increase in how much it costs the organisation to provide their care.
