Easy to follow SPAR recipe for beef stew. This is hearty and wholesome, perfect for the coldest winter evenings. With melt in your mouth beef and red wine gravy this dish is best served with creamy mashed potato and fresh green vegetables.

What you'll need

  • 2tbsp flour
  • 600g diced stewing or braising steak
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 150g baby onions or shallots
  • 150ml red wine
  • 200g carrots
  • 2 leeks
  • 300ml beef stock
  • 2 tsp mixed dried herbs
  • mash and green vegetables to serve


Sift 2 tbsp flour onto a plate and season with salt and pepper. Toss the beef in the flour to coat. Heat a tbsp. oil in a large lidded pan, add the beef and cook in batches over a high heat until brown. Remove from the pan. Reheat the pan and cook 150g baby onions or shallots, peeled and halved if large for 5 minutes or until softened. Add 150ml red wine to the pan, scraping up any stuck pieces. Return the beef with 200g chopped carrots, 2 chopped leeks, 300ml hot beef stock and 2 tsp dried mixed herbs to the pan. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for an hour. Serve with mashed potato and green vegetables.
