Dementia support charity Ty Hapus awarded £10,000

Welsh charity Ty Hapus has been chosen from nearly 4000 entries in the region, to be awarded a £10,000 grant from SPAR, which is providing funds to local voluntary and community organisations who need it most through its 2023 Community Cashback scheme.

Ty Hapus is Welsh for ‘Happy House’ and has provided home-from-home support and respite for people living with dementia and their families for over 11 years.

The charity is primarily a service for younger people with a diagnosis under the age of 65 with activities and sessions organised within the heart of the community using local businesses, attractions and areas of interest.

The SPAR Community Cashback campaign launched for a second year this April to give back to local communities that need support and will have donated £100,000 across the UK on behalf of their shoppers. To highlight the difficulties charities currently face with budgets tightening, SPAR polled 2,000 adults and found that in Wales a third aren’t able to give as much to charity as they would like in 2023 and 25% had given less donations as more families feel the squeeze.

Tess Thomas at Ty Hapus commented on how the grant from SPAR will help Ty Hapus:

“The grant means we can provide an extra day of support and care with an emphasis on being active and keeping well which is very important to those with a Dementia diagnosis, in turn providing vital respite for our carers. It will also be put towards a new Friday ‘Get active Group’ to enable out guests to access local facilities for more physical, age-appropriate activities.”

The charity was chosen to receive the grant by A.F Blakemore, one of the UK’s largest privately owned family businesses, who own more than 260 SPAR stores. As well as the SPAR retail and wholesale businesses, AF Blakemore operates across the foodservice, wholesale distribution and fresh meat sectors alongside Philpotts, a chain of prepared-food stores.

Sarah Ellis, Group Marketing Director at A.F Blakemore added:Dementia is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the UK and the overall number of people developing dementia in the UK is increasing. For the individuals and their families support is crucial and we were delighted to be able to provide funds to Ty Hapus that enabled them to extend their services for those in need. At SPAR we believe in nurturing our neighbourhoods and supporting the communities that we serve and the Community Cashback Scheme has ensured wonderful charities such as Ty Hapus can continue to support the community in Barry and beyond."
